Fitting winter tyres won't raise insurance premiums

Fitting winter tyres to vehicles in order to improve the handling of icy roads will not result in higher car insurance premiums, according to a recent announcement by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

The ABI's announcement sought to dispel car owners' financial worries about fitting winter tyres following recent media reports that indicated adding tyres might constitute a vehicle modification that would incur additional charges.

ABI's member insurers represent 90 per cent of the UK motor insurance market. Under the organisation's commitment, members have agreed not to charge additional premiums on policy holders who fit winter tyres, provided the tyres are fitted in accordance with the vehicle manufacturers' specifications and are in roadworthy condition.

The commitment covers cars used for personal use that are insured under a private or personal use car insurance policy.

ABI's director of general insurance, Nick Starling, said in the announcement: "Insurers do not want to penalise motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads."

He added: "Last year cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres. This commitment clarifies the position for motorists."

While ABI's insurers have signed on to the commitment to not charge additional premiums, some policies may require that policyholders notify their insurance providers when winter tyres have been fitted.

Additionally, the commitment does not cover fitting new wheels. Motorists who have winter tyres fitted to new wheels are encouraged to contact their car insurance provider for advice.
