Experts have advised drivers to have a close look at their car insurance policies following claims that some comprehensive cover has 'gaping holes'.
Research from comparison website moneysupermarket.com shows that comprehensive car insurance policies can vary significantly between different insurers, and some policies leave areas uncovered. These can include policies that do not automatically include legal cover if the driver has an accident or offer a courtesy car or breakdown cover, This Is Money reported.
Following recent news that car insurance now typically costs in excess of £4,000 per household for young male drivers, car owners are advised to do their research and compare car insurance when opting for a new policy.
Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Exclusions are commonplace. Drivers should scour the small print with a fine-toothed comb to ensure they don't get caught out.
"Shop around and take time to research the different options available in order to find the right car insurance policy for you."
The rise in the cost of car insurance is attributed to a number of factors, including the number of people who commit fraud in order to make false insurance claims and other pressures on the industry. However, UK law has recently been amended to require motorists to have their cars covered at all times if they are on the road, ensuring that insurance must be found despite price increases.
