A recent survey suggests that homebuyers are increasingly searching for energy-efficient properties.
The 'MOT Your Home' report from Pilkington energiKare has revealed that 76 per cent of homebuyers rate energy-efficiency as a major deciding factor when considering a property purchase.
The recent big freeze, which has seen many homeowners facing steep heating bills and home insurance claims due to flooding, is being cited as a reason for the increase in concern over choosing energy-efficient homes.
Respondents were found to be most concerned with loft insulation, energy-efficient boilers and energy efficient heating when considering new properties.
Architect and TV presenter on Channel 4's The Home Show, George Clarke has teamed up with Pilkington to offer advice to those hoping to upgrade their homes, either to sell or to enjoy the benefits themselves. "It's reassuring to know that more and more people are taking their home and their carbon footprint seriously, after all our homes are the biggest investments we are ever likely to make," he explained.
"What's important is that people are taking steps to change and recognising the added value greener living brings, such as cost savings and increasing the saleability of homes."
Homeowners can also find that energy-efficient changes to their property could lower their home insurance quotes and premiums.
Julia Berkin, Marketing Communications Manager at Pilkington, comments: "This winter has certainly led more people to re-evaluate the energy efficiency of their homes and it's encouraging to see that despite the recent recession, people are continuing to place sustainable living high on their agenda."
