Travel Insurance Questions

  • What is a Personal Travel Assistant?

Every single Marks & Spencer Travel Insurance policy includes our Personal Travel Assistant as standard. This service offers you benefits including help with holiday accommodation, travel advice and information, car rental and transport facilities, entertainment information and booking service, gift and shopping services plus all kinds of help for business travellers. Full details are listed in the policy wording.

If I am aged over 70, can I get insurance?

M&S Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance has an age limit of 75 for customers travelling to the USA, Canada or the Caribbean Islands and 80 for customers travelling to Europe and the Rest of the World.

M&S Single Trip Travel Insurance has no age limit but is not available to persons aged over 80 who are travelling to the USA, Canada or the Caribbean Islands (same limits apply to Premier & Standard cover).

What does Excluding Baggage cover mean?

It means that you can reduce the premium under your Marks & Spencer Travel Insurance by electing not to include cover for your baggage. Before you ask for this, please check that your household insurance provides suitable cover on your personal possessions whilst abroad, particularly for the period of travel (some policies limit the cover to 30 or 60 days in any one year).

My son is aged 19 and a full time student. Is he covered under Family cover?

Yes - Family cover includes up to four of your children, step children or foster children aged under 18 (or 23 if in full time education), travelling with you.

Can children travelling separately still be covered under an annual Family policy?

Yes - under annual multi trip policies each adult or child is also insured to travel alone provided that any children under the age of 16 are accompanied by a responsible adult.

    What is the excess waiver?

This is an option under the policy where you can pay an additional premium to remove the £50 excess that applies to every claim for each Insured Person under certain sections of the policy. Where we provide cover for a pre-existing medical condition any increased excess applied will not be removed by the excess waiver.

My wife is pregnant, is she covered?

You are covered under the policy, provided that you travel within the health requirements stipulated by the carrier, their handling agents or any other public transport provider. Please note, that the Emergency medical expenses section provides for emergency medical charges for bodily injury or illness, and normal childbirth would not constitute a bodily injury or illness.

My fiancée and I are marrying abroad. Can we cover the wedding dress and gifts?

Yes - if you purchase optional Wedding Cover. This covers your wedding attire for £1,500, gifts of £1,000 and rings for £250 each. You will also be covered up to £750 if under certain circumstances, your wedding photographs/video have to be retaken.

    Do you cover hazardous activities?

If you are planning to take part in any activities or sports not covered by this policy you must telephone our customer helpline on 0800 068 3918. In some cases cover can be given provided that the appropriate additional premium is paid. Full details of activities or sports not covered by this policy are given below:
abseiling, base jumping, boxing, bungee jumping, canoeing at grade 4 or above, caving, canyoning, mountaineering requiring the use of guides or ropes, expeditions, fencing, football (if the main purpose of the Trip), gliding, gymnastics, hang gliding, horseriding in competitions, hot air ballooning (unless as part of an organised trip with a qualified pilot), hunting, jetskiing (section G - Personal liability only), karate, kayaking, martial arts, microlighting, parachuting, paragliding, parapenting, polo, pot holing, rafting, rugby, shark diving, sky diving, sky surfing, underwater activities requiring the use of artificial breathing apparatus (except scuba diving to a depth of 30 metres when you hold suitable diving qualifications and are not diving alone, or you are accompanied by an accredited instructor) or wrestling.

One or more of our travelling party have a pre-existing medical condition, can I still apply online?

You can still apply online. During the application process you’ll be asked to specify details of any pre-existing medical conditions of each traveller. We will indicate if we are able to provide cover and if any additional premium will be charged. Then you can choose whether or not to include cover for these conditions.

    What is Independent Traveller cover?

Independent Traveller cover offers wider cover for those of us who prefer to make our own travel arrangements. This cover is automatically included on our Premier annual multi-trip policy and is an optional extension on our Single trip cover.

What’s the difference between an excess waiver and a double excess?

If you choose to waive your excess, you pay an extra premium to ensure that there’s no excess deducted from any claims payment. If you choose to double your excess, you’ll get a 10% discount off your premium but remember that you’ll have to pay double the excess amount in the event of a claim.
